Photography is not just about good camera and proper light; it is about a passion for good pictures, an eye for creativity, and knowledge about technique. Camera equipment is very essential to the art of photography yet there are other details that one must pay attention to if one is serious about making it a career.

Some people rate photography as their hobby and to enhance the quality of their work they voluntarily learn things as they go about this field. On the other hand there are people who want to take up photography as a profession, for them proper training can come in very handy. One needs to learn about the proper use of light, composition, camera science, image editing and production. A special degree or certificate in this regard proves quite helpful in this regard. Yet before starting out in this field one must also analyze whether he or she possesses all the “Must Haves” required in this field.

1. Flair for the visual

There should be some inherent quality present in you to edge you forward in this regard; creativity is a must in this field. Some people are born with while others develop over the years a fantastic visual awareness. It is very important that you stay original in your work; copying any idea might adversely affect your career. Hence, keep moving around and keep your open and you will surely find some source of inspiration for your next picture. Visiting exhibitions, reading books and all will obviously prove helpful. Remember, a professional will always of his own style and angle which will make an ordinary photo look extraordinary.

2. Technical know how

It is very important to know the technical side of photography and if you have the knack for it then it will not be too difficult to grasp. Fact is you just need to know the basics; no rocket science! Nevertheless if you can conveniently use multimedia, graphics and other photo software then it would certainly be beneficial.

3. Business savvy

It is not necessary that if you get a good picture it will automatically be in demand and sell well. No it won’t; initially you will have to go to the right people and sell your work. When you start off in this industry you will find that you are being paid far less than expected. Don’t get disheartened; if your work gets noticed and you are confident then start enhancing your negotiation skills, if the need arises then don’t sell your work where the deal is not even remotely in your favor. Soon someday your work will be recognized and people will be settling down to buy your photographs on the terms you specify. Maintain good relationship with your clients, they will recommend you to other prospective client. Be professional, and deliver the best you can within the deadline.

4. Dedication, Luck, Talent

Starting in this field is a very tough job as you won’t get sufficient money, and it is common knowledge that good photography equipment comes at fairly high prices. Your income as a freelance photographer or a photo journalist might barely keep you afloat, let alone buy the latest equipment. It is only with patience, hard work and dedication that you will survive in this field and get job as well as monetary satisfaction. Remember, even an established freelancer does not have a fixed income and hence it is for surviving in this field you need to have a little capital to help you build your career.

5. A good physical shape

This is a very physically demanding career option with field projects which might take you to rough terrains in bad weather. Hence, you must be physically fit to be on the move at any given moment. You need to move about with heavy equipment which surely requires a lot of strength. Hence, you need to stay in a good physical shape too.
Hence, we see there are many essential requirements apart from good camera and proper technique to survive in this field. Along with passion, hard work and dedication one must also be professional and business savvy.
