There are a lot of cheap painting materials which can be found in the market today but one must remember that these would not be enough in creating high quality paintings. In paint brushes for example, you have to have some guidelines in choosing brushes for oil creations. The same goes for other type of paintings. Basically, the best brushes are those that are made with sable or hog materials. Even though they are a bit expensive compared to the standard paint brushes, they are highly recommended because they can last longer and produce more solid lines. Brushes made with synthetic fibers are also good options but as an artist, you have to have at least one of the flat and round type brushes because these brushes are not so versatile.

Other important painting materials are the palette knives and painting palettes. These are used to place and mix the paint on and there are different types of palette knives which can also be used much like paint brushes. An artist also must always have a cranked palette knife and miniature flexible painting knives on his set.

In creating paintings, glazes and varnishes are also very important materials. Glazes are applied to artworks in thin layers that helps increase the transparency as well as the adhesiveness of the acrylic. A glaze can also be used in creating impastos if the painter desires to make thick or translucent impastos. Glazes can make the acrylic paint stays longer almost without fading. Using glazes is particularly helpful during warm days when paints can dry faster. As for the varnishes, these can be used to protect the surface of the acrylic paintings.

There are two main types of varnishes and these are the matt and the gloss. The matt type is used when we want to put a thick plastic like film covering on our paintings while gloss is applied for a shiny finish. A diluted solution of glaze can also be mixed with these solutions so that a more beautiful finish is acquired. Easels are also general requirements in creating paintings. Even though this equipment simply looks like a stand board for the canvass, there are actually different kinds of easels for different uses. If the painting is to be done in a studio, a basic radial easel is already enough. However, for outdoor acrylic creations, using a painting box along with the easel is recommended.

Painting boxes are also needed for outdoor settings because their flat and solid surfaces can keep the canvass steady on uneven surfaces. It can also be a helpful container for your painting materials. The last but the most important painting materials are the acrylic paints. Of the many painting materials available, acrylic paints are one of the most favorites among artists because of their versatility and affordability. The two types of acrylics are the standard and thin acrylic. Standard acrylics possess the same consistency like the oil paints so they are often used on painting landscapes that need rich and thick colors.

Thin acrylics, on the other hand, are more liquid in nature and are often used in creating abstracts. Another type of acrylic paint is the Polyvinyl Acetate Color which is often used in art classes for schools. However, this kind of acrylic is not recommended to be used in creating masterpieces because of its substandard quality.
