Window blinds have become ordinary fixtures inside our homes for many years now and now that they are available in many different designs they are still providing protection for our homes. Blinds are important window coverings which are attached to the interior side of the window panels. They provide us protection from strong wind, reduce noise, protect the rooms from intense sunlight and help maintain privacy. However, even though this is their main purpose, today, they are not only utilized for their functional uses but also have added features that can match the interior designs of our homes.

At present, there already exists wide range of blinds that consumers can choose from. First on the list are the Venetian blinds. These are the ordinary blinds that have horizontal slats that are arranged one above the other and held by either a strip of cloth or a cord. The slats move by rotating in different angles so that they overlap over each other and cover the room from light. By controlling the lever connected to the upper base of the blinds, we can control the amount of light that is entering the window.

The next type of blinds is the vinyl or faux blinds. This type is usually made with PVC material unlike the Venetian blinds that are commonly made of thin plastic or thin metal slats. Faux blinds have PVC slats that are also thin, smooth and usually glossy. It is very durable and waterproof and can block UV rays effectively as well as very easy to clean as compared to wooden blinds. The only disadvantage is that their slats are usually a lot heavier compared to the wooden and composite types of blinds so raising the blinds is quite difficult. They also have the tendencies of bending or arching when used on large windows.

The next type of blinds is the composite blinds which are made of combined polymer and wood products. This type is the most affordable but very durable so they are the best buy in the market. There is one little problem with this blinds, however, and this is its feel and features that really look plastic.

Another common type of window blinds is the wooden blinds. Wooden blinds are actually another type of Venetian blinds except that they are made from 100 wood. Wooden blinds have different finishes and consumers have a lot of varieties to choose from. There is the solid oak, fir to maple wood. When it comes to its cost, this type of blinds is not actually expensive but the problem is it requires more cleaning, can warp when frequently exposed to sunlight and discolor when frequented with sun and rain.

Wooden blinds can also be used for door cabinets and cupboards. Fortunately, wooden blinds at present are now manufactured with more durable finishes. There are now different types of wood that are used for wooden blinds. There are the Oriental hardwoods which are cheaper and the premium American hardwood like Basswood.

In choosing your windows blinds, you must know the specifications of blinds you will need. For example, you must be able to identify what material can best give you protection from UV rays and at the same time from dust and wind. Also study the position of the windows where you want to install them. If you will be placing them where sun can hit them extremely during the hot summer days, then choose blinds that are durable and weather proof and so on.
