This chateau, which is often under the radar (production is only 5,500-6,000 cases), has fashioned a terrific, inky/blue/purple-hued 2005 with a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, creme de cassis, pain grille, and blueberries. Powerful and concentrated with full-bodied richness, stunning purity, and a tannic, 40+-second finish, this beauty requires patience. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030+.

ROBERT PARKER: 89+/100 Drink: 2011 - 2026
This estate has vastly improved its wines, which remain reasonably priced, yet it is often ignored by many Bordeaux wine consumers. The tightly-knit, closed 2003 was one of the few wines of this vintage that I was only able to taste once. It is concentrated with elevated tannin, a saturated ruby/purple color, subtle smoke, flower, and black currant fruit characteristics, but a backward, broodingly closed palate. Based on this bottle, it will require 5-6 years of cellaring. It should last for 15-20 years.

Ce fut un millésime précoce, avec un printemps chaud et humide (mai : + 3°C par rapport aux normales et + 35 mm de pluie du 1er au 20 mai) . La mi-floraison fut notée au 31 mai, puis l'été fut chaud et plus ensoleillé que la moyenne. La mi-véraison intervint au 4 août, comme en 1989. Les douze premiers jours de septembre furent chauds et secs, la semaine suivante très arrosée, avec plus de 100 mm d'eau.
Les vendanges s'étalèrent du 20/09 au 8/10, avec des raisins sains, mûrs et bien constitués, grâce aux nombreuses opérations en vert réalisées pendant l'été.
En début d'élevage, les merlots étaient foncés, charmeurs, avec un tanin un peu austère, tandis que les cabernets paraissaient quasiment parfaits, très foncés, bien volumineux en bouche, avec des tanins d'emblée très fondus.
A partir de 2005/2007 ce 1999 est devenu l'un de nos millésimes préférés, avec un bouquet d'une grande finesse et très net, des arômes délicieux, un équilibre en bouche tout-à-fait remarquable et un touché de tanin splendide. Il va rester ainsi pendant plusieurs decennies, pour le plus grand plaisr des amateurs !

An opaque blue/purple color is accompanied by impressively sweet floral notes intermixed with black currant and blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied with high but round tannins, the 2010 Boyd-Cantenac is exceptionally well-endowed, textured and pure. This under-the-radar estate (a classified growth in the famous 1855 rankings) never seems to catch the attention of consumers. It deserves better. Enjoy the 2010 for 25 or more years.

Rich, full-bodied and concentrated, the 2011 Boyd-Cantenac merits serious interest. Moreover, it often sells at a very realistic price, so readers take note. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.

A sensational effort for the vintage, Boyd-Cantenac‘s 2004 should be on the shopping lists of all shrewd consumers looking for a terrific Margaux at a bargain basement price. Racy floral, black currant, and cherry notes soar from the glass of this complex wine. The evolved aromatics are followed by sweet, medium to full-bodied, pure flavors of cherries, black currants, and blackberries, ripe, moderate tannins, and outstanding depth as well as richness.

The product of a very hot, dry summer, but with rain during the critical month of September, this structured, concentrated wine seems to be very closed down and dense, with a healthy garnet/purple color and a big nose of mineral, underbrush, compost, and black fruits. Relatively powerful, but at the same time coarse and still a bit rude, this wine needs plenty of time in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. Last tasted, 3/00.

I need to pay more attention to this estate as Boyd-Cantenac is never that expensive. The beautiful 2000 exhibits a dense purple color as well as a beautifully pure nose of creme de cassis, asphalt, and a hint of forest floor. Having shed much of its tannin, it is a round, medium to full-bodied, elegant Margaux already revealing considerable complexity. Entering its plateau of full maturity, it should drink well for another decade.
