Each vintage reflects the unique terroir of Hermitage hill, offering wine lovers a memorable tasting experience and a superb expression of French Syrah.

Origin and Terroir

Nestled on the sun-drenched slopes of Hermitage hill overlooking the Rhône River, Château Guigal’s vineyards benefit from granite soils, steep gradients and a temperate continental climate. This rare combination imparts remarkable minerality, structure and aromatic purity to the grapes.

Winemaking Process

Grape Selection

Guigal Hermitage Rouge is made from 100% Syrah vines averaging 30–40 years of age. Hand-harvested in small crates, only perfectly ripe clusters make it into the winery.

Fermentation & Aging

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with frequent pump-overs to extract color and tannins. Post-fermentation maceration lasts 2–3 weeks. The wine then ages 18–20 months in French oak barrels (30% new) to develop additional complexity and integrate fine tannins.

Tasting Notes

Color: Deep ruby with purple hues.
Nose: Aromas of black cherry, blackberry liquor, smoked bacon, crushed violets and graphite.
Palate: Full-bodied and opulent, with layers of dark fruit, spice, leather and a hint of licorice. Well-balanced acidity and firm, ripe tannins lead to an impressively long, savory finish.

Food Pairing & Serving

Serve at 16–18 °C in large Bordeaux glasses. Ideal pairings include:

  • Roasted or grilled lamb, venison and duck breast
  • Beef bourguignon and hearty stews
  • Mature sheep’s cheese, aged Gouda or Comté

Decant for at least 1 hour before drinking for optimal aromatics. While approachable in its youth, Guigal Hermitage Rouge will continue to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years in a cool, humid cellar.
